Here’s another case of identity theft where the required information was obtained by the crook through more traditional means and had nothing to do with computers or the Internet.
A 47-year-old nurse in Charlottesville, Virginia was arrested and charged with stealing the identity of an elderly woman and then racking up $10,000 in debt buying jewelry, [...]

I think it all started with a web site somewhere that my wife visited and entered her name and phone number for some purpose or another.
The telephone rang a month or so ago and when I glanced at the Caller ID display, it read “Out of Area.” Uh oh, those are almost always trouble and [...]

Have you noticed lately, that every time you call some big company to ask a question or get help with something you get the old “Due to the heavy call volume we are experiencing, there may be a delay in being connected to a customer service representative” routine? Or at least something close to that?
No [...]

A computer a the veterinary school at U.C. Davis was hacked into and personal information for about 1500 students apparently was accessed.
The report goes on to state that the personal information stored on the computer system included names, birth dates and social security numbers. And this is the part that starts to get me more [...]

I’ve written here about the lottery scams where a consumer receives a notice in the mail informing them that they have won the lottery, complete with an enclosed check.
The recipient is instructed to cash the check and send a portion of the money back to the sender to pay for “taxes” on the winnings. The [...]

This story from Georgia nicely illustrates a point I made in an earlier post about how thieves obtain personal and financial information from consumers in order to commit crimes.
In this particular case, two servers who worked at an Applebee’s restaurant were gathering credit card numbers and providing them to another person who was using the credit card [...]

It seems that teens are becoming popular targets for online identity thieves. Kids these days are growing up online. As I type this, my two teenage sons are busy entertaining themselves with online multi-player games. Something they spend far too much time doing in my opinion.
Despite their tech savvy, today’s teens are falling victim to [...]

I just love stories like this one! This is probably the last thing these scumbag scammers expect when they call an 81-year-old woman.
The elderly Wisconsin woman received a phone call from someone informing her that she had won the Publisher’s Clearing House sweepstakes. At first she thought it sounded too good to be true and she [...]

A recent story on an Oklahoma news broadcast featured the story of a local woman who you might assume would be an unlikely identity theft victim.
The woman in question does not make purchases online, have a debit card or a car loan. Even still, a woman in Georgia was using her identity to apply for loans.
Since blaming [...]

The telephone rings, and like many modern consumers, you glance at the Caller ID display to see who is calling before you pick up. I’ve had Caller ID for years and rarely ever pick up without checking it. I love Caller ID.
Now who would expect that the name and number you see on the Caller [...]
