Teens Falling Victim To Identity Theft

24 June, 2007 (16:04) | Identity Theft

It seems that teens are becoming popular targets for online identity thieves. Kids these days are growing up online. As I type this, my two teenage sons are busy entertaining themselves with online multi-player games. Something they spend far too much time doing in my opinion.

Despite their tech savvy, today’s teens are falling victim to identity theft because they are not security savvy. Sites like MySpace make it easy for teens to share details of their lives, their likes, dislikes, hobbies, favorite hang-outs and lot’s of other stuff — some of it potentially harmful.

This makes it easier for identity thieves to befriend teens through these social web sites and use their skills to milk personal information out of them over time.

Teens need to realize that not everyone online is their friend and that there are a lot of people online who would like to take advantage of them.

Teens are attractive targets for identity thieves because most of them have clean credit records and lack knowledge about identity theft.

Everyone, not just teens, needs to take basic precautions to keep their personal information from falling into the hands of identity thieves.

Never give personal information out to someone online or on the phone and be very careful to keep information like your birth date and social security number private.
